§ 1. Introduction.
An approximation to the solution of the wave equation for amany-electron atom can be made by considering each electron tobe in a stationary state in the field of the nucleus and the re-mainder of the electrons, and further this field can be consideredas a central field and, if necessary, deviations from a central fieldcan be treated as perturbations.
